Because we devote ourselves deeply to our relationships with others, we often also devote ourselves to things within these relationships that displease us, or even harm us. Suffering from something familiar has a kind of intimacy that holds us back from seeking out something unknown, which might suit us better and satisfy us more.
When we create the strength to feel safe, we can also create the kind of relationships in which we feel as free as we need to.
Sometimes we must "betray" our relationships as they have been until now — what we were within them — in order to become what we most desire. We leave the relationships, not the people.
